Seasonal Wisdom :: Be Present with Change

Equinox – the point of balance between the hemispheres – is on us again.

As we slowly transition to winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere, I have been meditating on the wisdom of the in-between seasons of Fall and Spring.

The natural world and its cycles have much to teach us humans about how to navigate change in our modern lives.

By being present to the seasonal changes in the world around us, we gain wisdom in how we can hold stillness and motion in our inner worlds.

As an exercise in being present, make a point to take a walk around your neighbourhood every couple of days the next week or two

During your walks, slow your pace and try to notice every organic thing you come across:

fallen leaves, puddles, critters and birds,

clouds, blossoms and new growth,

the quality of light, temperature,

and the activity of the animals around you.

Pay close attention to whatever is shifting and changing in the world around you.

Is there a slowing down of activity or a revving up?

Are the trees shedding their leaves or are they budding with new growth?

How does this reflect your energy and action in your own life?

Are you able to recognise that change – even when it occurs as slow as a tortoise’s pace – is momentum?

To me, the greatest wisdom of Fall and Spring is that subtle change is constant and that you have to slow down to notice.

Slowing down my pace – be it my active mind or overscheduled life – is a lesson I continue to re-learn.

What wisdom does this season hold for you?
