In April 2007 I resigned from my comfortable office job with the intention of making a living doing what I love. Within the year I had birthed Crafting the Sacred and found my groove as a creative spiritual entrepreneur making it on my own.
I want to share with you some of the self-care business practices I have learned along the way so that you too can truly love working for yourself.
Adapt or Die
Over the past five years I have changed the services and products I offer, how I market them and even my website design numerous times. It’s been a meandering road of honing what I love doing, what I’m actually good at and what I want to be paid for.
One of my greatest lessons has been to let go of attachment of what my business “should” look like, what services I “should” offer and letting go of products that were not quite right for my target audience.
I have found that as long as I stick to my intention for my business – to support women being their full creative and passionate selves – the details of how it happens are less important.
When we listen to the voice of “should” or try to follow external expectations, our energy constricts and our clients feel it. The juicy growth lies in being adaptable and flexible so that energy continues to flow into your business.
Know when to tweak and adapt your business while sticking to your intention.
Don’t Sweat the Other Job(s)
There is a myth amongst creative entrepreneurs that once you identify your passion or soul work, you should leave your day job and the money will follow.
While I do believe that we thrive when we do our soul work, it is not always realistic that you’ll be able to support yourself immediately. Most business take at least two years to turn a profit. Two years is an awfully long time to not be able to pay the rent!
As I started my business just before the economic downturn, I had to find creative ways to supplement my income.
During the worst of the recession I worked a few days a week at a local needlework store. I have also sold used books on-line, participated in paid focus groups and earned affiliate commissions. Last year I even did voice-over work for TRON-inspired gaming products.
There is no shame in supplementing your business earnings with other work. It is simple economics and does not mean you are not serious about making your soul work, work.
Give yourself permission to make an easy transition into self-employment.
Follow your Body’s Rhythm
I never did well with the traditional 9-to-5 work schedule as I’m not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination. My favorite perk of working for myself is that I determine my work schedule.
I have found that it works best for me when I match my work schedule to the natural rhythm of my body, mind and energy cycles.
Ever since I switched up my day to quiet mornings of correspondence and social media; more energetic afternoons and early evenings of seeing clients; and occasional reflective evenings of writing and brainstorming, I am far happier…and productive!
Pay close attention to your natural energy rhythms, e.g. when do you work best with others, when is your mind the most alert, when do you love to schmooze, and the seasonal shifts in your energy. Plan your work schedule and project deadlines to align with your body’s natural rhythms.
Harness your body’s natural cycles to be more effective with your time.
Bookkeeping is Empowering
For a creative spiritual entrepreneur I may be an anomaly as I have to admit that I love systems and order. Despite the right brain orientation of my intuitive work, my analytical left brain loves smooth systems.
So it was not hard for me to implement simple bookkeeping systems from the get-go. Initially I used simple excel spreadsheets to track income and expenditures and then switched over to Quickbooks a couple of years ago.
What I found is that not only did it make tax time less stressful, but that I actually thrived when I was on top of my numbers.
I get so much satisfaction being able to track my income from my business each month and look at the trends. It has helped me to recognize the seasonal ebbs and flows in my work, which allows me to plan for the fallow times. More importantly, knowing the numbers helps me own my successes – big and small.
Taking charge of the numbers side of your business empowers you to own your success.
Saying No to Scarcity
When I first started out I was essentially on call 24/7 as I would attempt to respond to all client and potential client calls and e-mails immediately. I quickly began to feel burnt out and resentful.
I took a long hard look at what was underlying this practice and what was driving me to live in stress. I came to realize that it was deeply rooted in my own scarcity mentality.
I was telling myself that if I did not answer this potential client’s e-mail within minutes, I would lose income causing my business to fail. This has been my biggest a-ha moment in my approach to my business.
Recently I have changed my business practices to become clearer in my communication on my working hours, response time and payment terms. In saying no to the scarcity mindset, I have been able to relax and be more emotionally available in my interactions with clients. And sure enough this is paying off financially.
When you let go your fear of scarcity, you have more to give – and receive – in your business.
I truly love my work as a Coach and Intuitive Reader and being able to be so creative in how I run my business. I have learned so much about myself in the process of doing the work I love – from the practical systems that make it run smoothly behind the scenes to self-care rituals that sustain me as a creative spiritual entrepreneur.
Do any of my experiences resonate for you? I’d love to hear your own experiences in loving the work you do.

Hi Jo – wow, did these ideas resonate for me! I’m not at the point where I’ve launched as a business yet, but already, I can spot some of the ideas starting to take root in my mind. Thank you for highlighting and explaining the principles and practices that have helped you… have you thought about expanding this post out into an ebook? It might be a really useful thing to offer!
You know my husband said the exact same thing about expanding this into an ebook. I’m going to put this in my idea pile to percolate. Thank you so much for the positive feedback and good luck with birthing your new business!
Jo, I loved this post and I’ll second the idea about turning it into an ebook, or at least a longer series– I would love to hear more of the nitty-gritty details of what it took for you to get yourself to the flourishing point you’re at now. Do tell!
Yay,
Carolyn
Thank you for all the gentle nudges you have been giving me to share my business story, Carolyn. I’ll be sure to get into the nitty gritty soon – just figuring out the right forum.
Jo, you are doing amazing work. It seems I am always retweeting your articles and posts, and I just want you to know how much I appreciate what you are creating here!
Thank you so much for the kudos, Didi. It means so much to hear that my work is reaching the right people. In gratitude, Jo.
Tying two things together that you mentioned, following your body’s rhythm and ditching scarcity thinking: one big thing about working for yourself is managing your time. One big reason people become entrepeneur’s is to master their own time — BUT.. we tend to go from 40 hour weeks to 120 hour weeks, never realizing the need for down time. So: BUILD IT IN. This honors everyone!
Yes, yes, yes. I have worked my butt off for my own work and put in hours I never did when I had a boss. I agree with you that scheduling in down time – and sticking to it – is essential to sustain yourself and your business.
Such perfect timing! I am shifting into these things slowly and I love that you nailed it! I forwarded this on to my entrepreneur class fellows, so it will certainly help quite a few people. Thank you!!
Thank you Luna for your support and sharing this with your entrepreneur class. Wishing you all the best on your new business venture!
Jo – Thanks for sharing your wisdom! The one thing that really leaps out is setting up proper business systems and bookkeeping. So many entrepreneurs don’t want to deal with the practical side of their soul work that it’s not practical at all for them to pursue it.
Even if the numbers aren’t where one would like (I have seen plenty of red ink over the years), *knowing* your reality allows you to own it – which you have to do before you can change it. And if the numbers are where one likes to see them, it’s terrifically validating to see the very real results of one’s work.
Anastasia
I agree Anastasia. Our fear of numbers can be a huge obstacle to growing our businesses and making shrewd business decisions.
I always suggest to my clients that if they are completely overwhelmed by bookkeeping, it is worth the investment to hire someone to do it for them. Rather get help so you can focus on what you love than run your business into the ground through denial!
Jo, this is so wonderfully put, thanks for sharing your path and what works for you. I find my biggest challenges have been marketing and time management. Which lends to working way too much and forgetting how important the self-care is…something I came to realize a few weeks ago.
Thank you Allurynn. I think my next business self-care post will have to be on marketing and time management then
I love this post! I’m just starting out, but I’ve learned a lot of these lessons already. I’m crossing my fingers for the day I need a bookkeeping system!
Thanks Ellie. All the best as you work towards needing that bookkeeping system
Thank you for the ‘Saying No To Scarcity’ part, I am also learning not to feel giref about saying no to something if my heart is simply not in it.
I agree Stella – we need to own our no’s. Here’s to us all listening to where our heart wisdom guides our businesses.
Awesome post, Jo! Love it. I especially love the bit about scarcity thinking – I know that being always “on” is damaging in so many ways, but I hadn’t thought of it as a facet of the scarcity mindset, which makes total sense. I’d love to see more posts like this!
Wow, nothing like getting kudos from the queen of productivity herself! Thank you Michelle. From all these comments it’s apparent that there is a real need for me to share more of the emotional self-care and abundance strategies in making our work, work for us
Hi Jo, I just came across your site now and really enjoyed your post. As I’m going through a transformation in my own business in terms of what it looks like and the different ways I want to work with people (rather than just one on one as I have been) it was so helpful to hear about your own process. Thank you for sharing
Welcome Kerry. I’m touched that my experience spoke to you too. Wishing you all the best as your business grows into its new form in abundance.
Jo this is a great post! It’s inspiring to hear stories from people who are further down the road of self employment. I add my voice to the chorus asking for more.
Thank you Tina. I love being inspired by everyone’s stories too and am happy to add to the pool of supporting each others success.
This has been a help to me. I am just beginning to explore how my work might manifest itself in the world and the not knowing can be daunting and frustrating. This reminds me to allow things to grow organically. I hope I can one day feel the same about book-keeping as you too!!!
Happy to be of help Samantha – especially to encourage you to allow you business vision to take root organically. Wishing you all the best!
I loved this post – so practical and intuitive at the same time! I am working on catching the thoughts that are grounded in scarcity and releasing them for a deeper wisdom.
Practical and intuitive – that’s me! Releasing scarcity to make space for deeper wisdom sounds divinely-inspired.
I really like this idea of following my own rhythm. This resonates with me. I have been trying to hard to do too many things at once in a day and feeling like I go in circles. I’m going to relax more and see what feels natural to be working on at any given point in my day.
Thank-you for this.
So happy to hear that this resonated for you, Petrea. Let me know how it works out for you to listen more deeply to what your body and energy has to say.
